The Babylonians are said to be the first people to make resolutions for the new year in the form of promises. They made promises to the gods to pay their debts and returned anything they borrowed. If they kept these promises, they believed they will be in the gods’ good graces, and if they didn’t they would fall out of their favor1. In modern times, we have moved toward a more secular practice of setting resolutions that have mainly focused on self-improvement. The track record of successful self-improvement resolutions has not been great. It is estimated that out of around 40% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions, only 8% of people have actually achieved them2. Why is this and how can we change it?

  • Your goals are not achievable. People really want to change in the new year. They set huge goals that they want to accomplish and try to make too many changes at once. The smart thing to do is break up the larger goals into smaller ones and make one change at a time. Once you achieve one goal, move to the next and so on.
  • Lack of confidence in achieving your goal. As mentioned, many people have failed in their past New Year’s resolutions. This definitely plays a role in confidence. With lack of confidence comes failure to act because there is a fear that you won’t succeed. We want you to think about why you didn’t achieve your past goals. Write these reasons down, and then come up with solutions of how to fix the reasons you failed previously. Coming up with solutions to your past mistakes will help you gain the confidence you need to achieve your goals for 2020.
  • You have no social support. It’s common for people to keep their goals secret because they may feel self-conscious about their goals or they are afraid to fail in front of others. It’s so important to not be alone during time of change. You need someone to help keep you motivated and provide you with some kind of accountability, even if it’s strangers in a Facebook group.
  • You lack happiness. Not having fun trying to achieve your New Year’s resolution leads to failure. Think about it… if you are unhappy doing something, why would you be motivated to continue? When you set your new goals, make sure you think about fun ways to achieve them. If you can’t think of any, maybe consider tweaking your goals.
  • You don’t have a plan. One the biggest mistakes people make when trying to make change, is jumping in without any plans. Without a plan, when you run into a road block you won’t know how to get around it. In this case, you will most likely run into setback after setback. Before you begin your journey, write down exactly how you want to achieve your goals. If you still have a setback, it’s okay just take a look at your plan and get back on board.
Are any of these reasons why you have not achieved your past New Year’s resolutions? Let us know in the comments!

Make Your Summer Anti-Inflammatory https://imaginehealthy.org/blog/others/make-your-summer-anti-inflammatory/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=make-your-summer-anti-inflammatory Sun, 30 Jun 2019 10:51:49 +0000 http://imagine.chi-llc.net/?p=933 With kids out of school, vacations and long, hot days, we tend to get off track to an anti-inflammatory lifestyle in the summer. To help you out, we came up with a few tips so you can move forward to a healthier you and still do what you love this season!

  1. Hydration is important during this time of the year so make it a habit. Start your day with a glass of water, always carry a water bottle and fill your diet with water-rich foods to get the water you need.
  2. In the summer you are out in the sun way more than other times of the year. To help protect yourself from skin damage and even skin cancer make sure you are always wearing sunscreen!
  3. Everyone loves to take their meals outside during the summer, but there are a few rules you need to follow. Make sure you transport food on ice, don’t let food sit out more than 2 hours, and toss the leftovers.
  4. Watermelon is a staple at picnics and summer backyard cookouts and it has amazing health benefits! Grab a slice of watermelon this summer to help protect against diabetes, hydrate yourself, and lower inflammation.
  5. When it’s hot outside ice cream sounds so good! This Banana Ice Cream is a delicious anti-inflammatory option!
  6. Summer is the time for family vacations! Even when traveling you can maintain an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. One way is to pack your own food when taking a road trip instead of stopping at fast food restaurants.
  7. Summertime produces lots and lots of berries. Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries are a go to when you are wanting a sweet, refreshing snack. They are also a good topper to make your ice cream less inflammatory.
  8. Food safety is important when eating outside in the summer. Food borne illnesses increase in warmer weather. Keep food safe during cookouts and camping trips by handling, preparing, and cooking it properly.
  9. One way to keep your cooler cold this summer is to try to pack your cooler 75% with food and 25% with ice, frozen drinks or ice packs. This will help allow cold air to flow more freely within the cooler.
  10. Take a hike with your friends or family this summer. Hiking is a great cardio workout and helps lower your risk of heart disease. Remember to stay hydrated!
  11. Enjoy the farmers markets in your area this summer! They will be filled with bright and colorful, anti-inflammatory options and it will be a fun day for your whole family!
  12. Tacos are a favorite grab and go meal in the summer. Reach for the corn tortillas instead of the flour for a more anti-inflammatory option.
